Kathleen Rice on Crime

Lifelong prosecutor: led with tough enforcement

As a lifelong prosecutor, Kathleen Rice has devoted her life to making our neighborhoods safer. As a former homicide prosecutor in Brooklyn, and as a federal gun crimes prosecutor in Philadelphia, Kathleen's never been afraid to go after those who bring violence to our communities. As district attorney, Kathleen has led with tough enforcement of gun laws and intelligence-driven investigations aimed at seizing illegal weapons before they hit our streets. Under Kathleen's leadership, the office has also formed community partnerships and innovative prevention programs in our schools that empower students to make smart choices about guns, drugs, and gang violence. Kathleen has led Nassau's hugely successful gun buyback program, which has already taken more than 3,000 illegal guns off our streets. And last year, Kathleen ran an operation that led to the arrest of 14 members of the violent Rollin 60s gang, dismantling the number one source of illegal firearms in Nassau County.

Fund community partnerships and evidence-based prevention

Support community-oriented public safety and prevention programs--Kathleen will fight to fully fund vital community-oriented public safety partnerships and evidence-based prevention and intervention programs that are proven to help steer at-risk children away from guns and gang violence.

As district attorney, Kathleen has seen first-hand how effective such programs are when they are developed collaboratively with local law enforcement, clergy, social and health services, and other community stakeholders. These programs save lives and save money by helping to curb recidivism, reduce jail populations and break down the school-to-prison pipeline.
